It is official, Zizou is coming home. France have turned to their greatest ever player to lead Les Bleus into a new era.
In a move French fans have waited years for, Zinedine Zidane has been confirmed as the new head coach of the France national team, cbinews.tv can confirm.
The appointment comes after Didier Deschamps, France’s longest-serving manager, ended his remarkable 14-year reign following Les Bleus semi final defeat to Spain at the 2026 World Cup.
For Zidane, it is a full-circle moment. A World Cup winner with France in 1998 and widely regarded as the nation’s greatest ever player, the 54-year-old has been out of management since leaving Real Madrid for a second time back in 2021. Now he is back, and the job could not be bigger.
The French Football Federation has confirmed the legend will sign a deal that will see him take charge through to the 2030 World Cup qualifiers.
Speaking after his appointment, Zidane said it was a great source of pride to take over the side that finished fourth at this summer’s World Cup.
He said: “I have often said it, there is nothing greater than the French national team. So it is a joy and obviously a great source of pride to become the manager of this French national team.
“It is also a responsibility. I want to thank French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo, the executive committee, and the French Football Federation for their confidence and acknowledge the 14 years of service from Didier and his staff.
“I also have a special thought today for all my coaches. Needless to say, I have high ambitions for the French national team.”
FFF president Philippe Diallo described the appointment as a landmark moment for French football.
He said: “The appointment of Zinedine Zidane as head coach of the French national team is a source of immense pride for the French Football Federation.
“It marks the meeting of a legend in the history of Les Bleus, who has become one of the most decorated and respected coaches of his generation, and a team with rare potential, driven by the highest ambitions.”
Zidane has huge shoes to fill. Deschamps guided France to three major finals during his tenure, including that unforgettable World Cup triumph in 2018.
Zidane’s first competitive test will be a Nations League trip to Turkey on 25 September. The Zidane era begins.
