The world’s two most powerful men are about to sit down again, and everything from your iPhone price to a potential AI meltdown is on the table.

So it’s official, China’s leader Xi Jinping is heading to Washington this Wednesday for face-to-face talks with President Donald Trump. Beijing confirmed it this morning.

According to cbinews. tv, tv, Xi will be in the US until Friday, with Trump set to personally welcome him at Joint Base Andrews. It’s a return favour — remember, Trump got the red-carpet treatment from China’s VP when he landed in Beijing back in May.

What are they actually talking about? Well, almost everything, in Trump’s own words.

First, trade. The US and China have kept a fragile tariff truce going for almost a year now, but they still don’t have a proper deal. Vice Premier He Lifeng is already in Washington with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent trying to thrash it out. China is holding a massive card here — it controls nearly 70% of the world’s rare earths, those critical minerals that go into everything from EVs to fighter jets. It used that leverage last year to force Washington to back down on sky-high tariffs.

Second, AI, and this is huge. Both sides are racing for supremacy, and Washington has now proposed a direct notification channel for AI “incidents” that could threaten national security. Think AI apocalypse warnings, but as actual policy.

And third, Iran and Taiwan. China is one of Iran’s biggest oil customers and diplomatic backers, and it’s desperate to avoid US sanctions as Trump’s war in the Middle East enters its seventh month. Then there’s Taiwan — Beijing still claims it, Taipei still relies on Washington. Trump is even reviewing a $14bn arms sale to the island, calling it a “very good negotiating chip.”

Why does this matter to you?

Because when these two sneeze, the global economy catches a cold. Tariffs mean higher prices in the shops. Rare earth curbs mean delays for tech and cars. And a misstep over Taiwan or AI could genuinely destabilise the world.

This isn’t their first rodeo. The US-China relationship has swung from a trade war in 2018-19, to Trump’s landmark 2017 Beijing visit, to a near-freeze over Taiwan in recent years. The pattern is always the same: talk tough, then seek a truce.

Analysts are keeping expectations low. As former US deputy secretary of state Kurt Campbell put it, the best we can hope for right now is another truce to see us through the year.

Watch Thursday; that’s the main summit day. If they walk away with a deal on AI communication and extend the tariff truce, that’s a win. If they don’t, expect markets to wobble by Friday.
