Behind every smile on your timeline, someone could be silently drowning. Today is the day we stop scrolling past it.
As reported by cbinews.Today, 10 September, is World Suicide Prevention Day – and this year, it hits differently.
World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD). Every 10 September since 2003.
The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), in partnership with the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Theme: For 2024-2026, the triennial theme is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide” – a call to move from silence and stigma to open conversation and compassion.
It is not just a hashtag day. It is a global checkpoint to remind us that suicide is preventable.
The Human Angle We Can't Ignore:
At cbinews.tv, our video today pauses to remember three names that have left a hole in our creative community: Ogbeni Goggo, Anda Damisa (Lazy Writer), and Alphonso Smith Junior.
We don't share their stories for sensationalism. We share them because they remind us of a painful truth we often forget online – people can be hurting badly behind closed doors while still making us laugh, think, and feel. Grief like this ripples far beyond timelines; it sits in family WhatsApp groups, empty chairs, and unfinished drafts.
If you have ever lost someone this way, you know that "I had no idea" feeling. This day is for them, and for those still here who might be fighting the same quiet battle.
Why It Matters:
Let's talk numbers, because they are staggering.
The WHO estimates that over 727,000 people died by suicide in 2021 alone. Globally, suicide is one in every 100 deaths and remains the third leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds – second for young women, third for young men. The UN puts the annual figure at around 720,000 lives lost every year.
And 2026 isn't letting up. Reports tracking WHO data noted that over 95,000 people had already died by suicide in the first few weeks of 2026.
In Nigeria, the conversation is even more urgent. Mental health support is still heavily stigmatised, access is limited, and economic pressure, academic stress, and online bullying are pushing more young people to the edge – particularly in places like Lagos, where cases linked to methods like hanging and pesticide poisoning are reported almost daily.
That is why suicide should never be framed as an option. At CBI News TV, we stand firmly against it.
How Do We Actually Help?
You don't need a degree in psychology to save a life. You just need to be present.
1. How to spot the quiet cries for help: Withdrawal, sudden mood swings, talking about being a burden, saying goodbye in unusual ways, giving things away, or posts that say "I'm tired of everything." Don't dismiss it as clout or attention-seeking.
2. How to respond: Be kind. Be nicer. Be polite and helpful – you genuinely never know what someone else is carrying. If a message sounds like a cry for help, don't look away. Check in privately. Ask directly but calmly: "Are you thinking about hurting yourself? I'm here to listen."
3. What not to do: Don't judge, don't debate whether their pain is "valid", and don't promise to keep it a secret if they are unsafe.
Next Steps – Be The Reason Someone Stays:
This year's message is simple: Be the reason someone stays.
If you or someone you know is struggling in Nigeria:
* Lagos Lifeline (Lagos State Govt): 0909000MIND / 09090006463
* SURPIN (Suicide Research & Prevention Initiative): 09080217555, 09034400009, 08000787746 (Toll Free)
* Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative (MANI): 0809 111 6264
* National Emergency Line: 112 or Lagos Emergency: 767
* If someone is in immediate danger, don't leave them alone. Go with them to the nearest hospital or call emergency services.
Outside Nigeria, find your local helpline via findahelpline.org.
A small act of care – a DM, a call, a "how are you, really?" – can interrupt a dark moment. Let's change the narrative from silence to support.
If this piece spoke to you, share it. You never know who needs it today.
