"Climate change is no longer a distant threat." That was First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu's blunt message to Nigerians this Friday.
Marking World Environment Day 2026, themed "A Global Call for Climate Action", the First Lady said it's time for everyone to stop treating the environment like an afterthought.
She pointed to what we're already living through: rising temperatures, flooding, drought, desertification and general environmental degradation. It's not theory anymore, she said, it's hitting lives, livelihoods, food security and public health right here in Nigeria and around the world, cbinewstv reports.
In her words: "Climate change is no longer a distant threat. Rising temperatures, flooding, drought, desertification, and environmental degradation continue to affect lives, livelihoods, food security, and public health across the globe, including here in Nigeria."
She emphasised that the fix isn't just for government. Individuals, communities and nations all have a role to play in restoring the environment, protecting our natural resources, promoting sustainable practices and building climate-resilient societies.
Her final charge was simple and collective: "Let us rise together in this global call for climate action and work toward a safer, greener, and more sustainable future for all."
