From rising living costs to poverty and job shortages, decisions made at the World Bank’s meetings could affect millions of lives. Global leaders are gathering in Bangkok to discuss how to turn development promises into real change.

The 2026 World Bank Group Meetings begin on Sunday in Bangkok, Thailand, bringing together government officials, business leaders, civil society groups and academics to tackle some of the world’s biggest development challenges.

The World Bank says preparations are complete, with discussions expected to focus on economic growth, poverty reduction and more inclusive, sustainable development.

The timing matters. Many countries are still grappling with economic uncertainty, high living costs and limited opportunities, leaving families struggling to afford basic needs and young people searching for jobs.

Established in 1944, the World Bank Group has played a major role in financing development projects, from infrastructure to education and healthcare. But its work also faces questions over debt, funding priorities and whether economic support reaches the people who need it most.

The key test in Bangkok will be whether leaders can move beyond promises and agree on practical solutions, with clear funding, measurable targets and accountability.

For millions facing poverty, the real measure of success will be whether these discussions lead to better jobs, stronger public services and improved living standards.
