Wait, did a former governor really just admit to listening in on Nigeria’s National Security Adviser? A court witness says yes — and the drama unfolded live on TV.
So, here’s what went down at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday. A witness has told the court that former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, basically admitted on live TV that he intercepted phone conversations belonging to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
The witness, Deji Adeyanju, was actually at the same TV station that day — 16th February — waiting for his own interview slot. According to Adeyanju, El-Rufai said during his interview: “we listened to the conversations of the NSA.”
Now, El-Rufai is facing trial by the DSS over claims he broke the Cybercrimes Act 2024 and the Nigerian Communications Act 2003. The charges? Allegedly tapping Ribadu’s calls and putting national security at risk.
Adeyanju, who was subpoenaed by the court, told prosecuting lawyer Oluwole Aladedoye (SAN) that he even saw the interview live. The court later played the recording, and Adeyanju confirmed it was the same one. He also said El-Rufai added that “someone did the phone tapping and passed the information to him.”
Under cross-examination by El-Rufai’s lawyer, Paul Erokoro (SAN), Adeyanju clarified he didn’t hear El-Rufai say he *personally* hacked Ribadu’s phone. What he heard was: “we listened to the conversations of the NSA.”
The court has now admitted the interview video and an official gazette as evidence. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik adjourned the case till 23rd June.
El-Rufai is facing a three-count charge, including unlawfully intercepting Ribadu’s phone comms during that Arise TV Prime Time interview on 13th February 2026, and failing to report whoever did the tapping. All of it allegedly contrary to the Cybercrimes Act and the Nigerian Communications Act.
