When teachers took their anger to the streets of Abuja, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike had one message – we’re on it, but stop turning security into politics.
Teachers and civil society groups rocked up at the FCTA Secretariat on Tuesday demanding answers over recent school kidnappings. And Wike didn’t dodge them, cbinews.tv reports.
Speaking to the demonstrators, the FCT Minister said security agencies are working round the clock to bring the abducted teachers and students home.
“We are all concerned about this security situation. The government is on its toes to ensure that those who are kidnapped are rescued,” Wike told the crowd.
He doubled down on his faith in Nigeria’s security forces, pushing for speed: “I have that confidence that the security system will do all they can to make sure the teachers and the students that are being kidnapped are rescued, and let it be prompt.”
But Wike also had a warning. He called out attempts to score political points from the crisis, saying insecurity is a national headache, not a partisan football.
“Let us not politicise issues. That is what I will not support,” he said. He pointed out that teacher abductions have happened in other states too, without protests hitting Abuja, and urged a united front instead.
According to cbinews.tv, Wike revealed that security agencies are following protocol and have made “significant progress” behind the scenes. He insisted no government would sit back while citizens are at risk: “There is no government that will deliberately say let citizens be kidnapped… everything possible is being done.”
His big ask? National solidarity. “What concerns you concerns everybody, and what concerns Abuja also concerns everybody,” he said. Basically, an attack on one school is an attack on all of us.
The protest comes as worry grows over a spate of school abductions across Nigeria, with teachers’ groups demanding tighter security around schools and the safe return of victims.
