Wike Says Only 2027 Goal is Tinubu’s Re-election

If you thought FCT Minister Nyesom Wike was plotting his own presidential run, think again. He says his only job right now is getting Tinubu back in.
Wike spoke on Monday, September 22, in Abuja after inspecting ongoing road projects across the capital. His message was blunt. His main political priority is making sure President Bola Tinubu secures a second term in 2027.
He was reacting to chatter that the cross-party Rainbow Coalition linked to him was set up to destabilise existing parties. Wike called that claim baseless. He said the coalition is simply a gathering of people from different platforms who back Tinubu.
“My primary concern is whether Tinubu will be reelected for a second term, and I have made it known from the onset that I am going to support Mr President with all my might and strength, he told newsmen.
For many Abuja residents, politics matters less than the potholes. Wike inspected the Inner Southern Expressway from Ring Road I to Ring Road II, the service lanes of the Southern Parkway from Arterial Road S20 in Gaduwa District to Ring Road II, and the link road from Nile University to Ring Road III.
He said he is pleased with the pace and quality and promised delivery before the general elections in January 2027.
Wike remains one of the most influential figures in Nigerian politics. Former governor of Rivers State and a key face of the G5 governors who broke ranks with PDP in 2023, his support was widely seen as crucial to Tinubu's victory.
With over 93 million registered voters in 2023 and FCT alone holding more than 1.5 million voters, any coalition that can mobilise across party lines could shift numbers in 2027.
What is the Rainbow Coalition? Wike says it is not a new party and it is not stopping anyone from supporting other interests. It is, in his words, an umbrella for his own party members and like-minded Nigerians who are not APC members but want Tinubu to continue.
This is not Wike’s first big gamble. In 2022 he contested PDP presidential primaries and came second to Atiku Abubakar. In 2023, the G5 refused to back Atiku, and many analysts believe that helped Tinubu win. Wike now asks why no one complained then.
Looking back at 2023, when it was the G5, why did nobody complain that it would destabilise the party? Did the President not win? Did it affect the APC-controlled National Assembly? he queried.
Wike also dismissed talk that he is positioning for the presidency in 2031, saying only God determines who will be alive then and that by 2031 Tinubu will have an interest in who succeeds him.
