The renovation begins after police unsealed the building....
A faction of Nigeria’s opposition Peoples Democratic Party backed by Nyesom Wike has begun renovation of the party’s national secretariat in Abuja following its unsealing by police.
A News Agency of Nigeria reporter on Monday observed ongoing work at Wadata Plaza in Abuja’s Zone 5 district, although staff had yet to resume duties.
The development follows the removal of barricades around the complex after police granted access to the Wike-backed National Working Committee (NWC) but security personnel and vehicles remained stationed at the premises.
A party member, who declined to be named, said renovation began on Sunday and included painting, replacement of air conditioners, and changes to office locks and allocations for new NWC members.
As of the time of reporting, no party officials had resumed work at the secretariat.
Factional National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed had on Saturday announced the reopening of the secretariat and the party’s presidential campaign office, Legacy House, in Maitama, citing compliance with court orders.
A statement issued by National Publicity Secretary Jungudo Mohammed, said the property had been handed over to his leadership, with Samuel Anyanwu serving as National Secretary.
He commended the police for professionalism but warned against any attempt to disrupt activities at the facility.
The rival Turaki-led faction criticised the move, describing it as contempt of court. Spokesman Ini Ememobong said the judgment cited had been appealed and warned the action could undermine pending proceedings at the Court of Appeal.
