WHO Warns Cholera Outbreaks Worsening Across 31 Countries

WHO has reported worsening cases of Cholera outbreaks.

The global cholera crisis is worsening, with outbreaks reported in 31 countries and a sharp rise in deaths, the World Health Organization warned on Friday.

The UN agency said the surge is fueled by conflict and poverty, leaving rural and flood-hit communities particularly at risk.

Cholera, a severe intestinal infection spread through contaminated food and water, has claimed 4,738 lives from 409,222 cases recorded worldwide between January 1 and August 17.

Although cases dropped 20 percent compared to the same period last year, fatalities rose 46 percent.

CBI News reports that new outbreaks have also emerged in countries like the Republic of Congo and Chad, both now facing some of the world’s highest fatality rates at 7.7 and 6.8 percent respectively.

Cholera can kill within hours without treatment, though most cases can be managed with oral rehydration and antibiotics. Since 2021, both global infections and the disease’s geographic reach have steadily increased.
