Worried about Ebola reaching Nigeria? Here’s what the WHO just said — and why the risk is low for now.
So, should Nigeria be panicking about Ebola? Not according to the World Health Organization.
According to cbinewstv, WHO says Nigeria’s risk is low right now, especially when you compare it to some of our West African neighbours.
Chikwe Ihekweazu, Executive Director of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme, dropped that update on Tuesday while speaking on Arise Television’s ‘Morning Show’.
He pointed out that this is only the ninth time ever that an outbreak has been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Big deal, basically.
Right now, Uganda is the only country outside the Democratic Republic of Congo with confirmed Ebola cases. “Nigeria’s risk is low,” Ihekweazu stressed.
But he didn’t downplay the situation either. “This Ebola outbreak is serious and requires an internationally coordinated response. It has already spread to other countries,” he said.
This is the third time Ebola has hit that emergency threshold. DR Congo alone has over 300 confirmed cases spread across the country.
For context, Ebola is a severe and often fatal virus that causes viral hemorrhagic fever in humans and non-human primates. Nasty stuff.
