It’s not just hot – it’s deadly. The WHO says Europe’s record-breaking heatwave has already claimed more than 1,300 lives since 21 June, and it’s only getting worse.
According to cbinews.tv, Europe is sweltering through a brutal heatwave – and the numbers are grim. The World Health Organization revealed on Sunday that more than 1,300 excess deaths have been recorded across the continent since 21 June, all linked to the scorching temperatures.
France alone has been hit hard. Health officials there said around 1,000 more people died than expected just since Wednesday. And the heat isn’t letting up.
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus posted on X that “heat stress is often called the ‘silent killer’ – and European homes, workplaces and schools were not built for these temperatures.” He’s not wrong. With 191 million people expected to face at least 35°C on Sunday, countries like Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland are really feeling it.
In total, 381 million people across Europe – not counting Turkey – will see the mercury rise past 30°C, based on forecasts from the German Meteorological Service and population data from Austrian NGO Klimadashboard.
“Millions of people across the continent are currently living under extreme heat, hundreds have died, schools are shut, grids are buckling,” Tedros warned.
He pointed out that these ‘once-in-a-generation’ heatwaves are now happening almost every year, driven by climate change. Europe, he noted, is warming at twice the global average – making it the fastest-warming continent on Earth.
The WHO says it’s working with countries to tackle the health risks through better preparedness, prevention and stronger health system responses. Tedros is urging European governments to roll out heat health action plans to protect people as climate change bites harder.
