Horror in Washington this week as a massive chemical tank explosion has left multiple people dead and others fighting for their lives. Here’s what we know so far.
So, some pretty devastating news coming out of Washington state, according to cbinews.tv. A chemical tank at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging facility in Longview has ruptured, killing several people and leaving others with critical injuries.
Emergency crews were still on the scene Tuesday in Cowlitz County, about 45 miles north of Portland, Oregon. The Longview Fire Department, Nippon, and the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the fatalities in a joint statement, though they haven’t put a number on it yet.
At least nine workers and one firefighter were rushed to hospital with chemical burns and other injuries. Scott Goldstein, Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue chief, told reporters the death toll is still “undetermined” at this point.
PeaceHealth St John Medical Center in Longview told ABC News they’ve treated nine patients from the incident. Sadly, one person died, six are in fair condition, and two were transferred to other hospitals.
So what happened? Officials say a tank holding “white liquor” – that’s a nasty mix of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide used to make paper pulp – imploded around 7:15am local time. Goldstein said the 80,000-gallon tank was about 60% full when it went.
The good news, if you can call it that, is authorities say there’s “no immediate threat to the surrounding community.”
Meanwhile, down in southern California, officials have been keeping an eye on a separate scare. An industrial tank full of methyl methacrylate – a highly flammable chemical used for plastics – was overheating at a GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove.
Orange County Fire Authority’s Greg Barta said Tuesday morning that the worst-case scenario of an explosion was ruled out Monday after a crack in the tank relieved some pressure. Temps are holding steady now, and crews are working to get evacuated residents back home ASAP.
