Bad news if you were planning to hop on the Warri–Itakpe train this week – services have just been put on hold.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has hit pause on the Warri–Itakpe Train Service, and it’s effective immediately.
According to a statement released Wednesday by the NRC’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, the decision comes down to “operational challenges” and technical advice from their engineers. Basically, they’re saying it’s all about keeping passengers safe Nigerian Railway Corporation. Cbinewstv reports.
“NRC wishes to inform the general public and esteemed passengers that the Warri-Itakpe Train Service has been temporarily suspended due to operational exigencies and technical advice from our engineers,” the statement read.
The NRC says the suspension was unavoidable if they want to guarantee safe, efficient travel on that standard gauge line. For now, they’ll be running “critical operational assessments” to sort out reliability and service delivery.
This is a big deal for the hundreds of passengers, traders and civil servants who’ve come to rely on the route. With fuel costs up and highways feeling less secure, the train had become the go-to option for many.
The NRC is asking everyone to bear with them, saying they’re working to fix things “within the shortest possible time.” They also promised to share updates on when services will resume before the week runs out.
“Passengers and intending travellers will be duly informed before the end of the week on the date for the resumption of normal train operations,” the NRC added, while apologising for the inconvenience.
