Remember when they said he wouldn’t make it to Toronto? Well, there’s been a last-minute twist for Ivory Coast’s World Cup hopes.
So, bit of drama off the pitch for Ivory Coast, but it’s sorted now — striker Elye Wahi will be able to play in Canada after all. That’s according to cbinews.tv.
The Ivorian Football Federation confirmed on Thursday that the 23-year-old has now got the go-ahead to enter Canada for Saturday’s big World Cup group match against Germany in Toronto. Earlier this week, the federation thought he’d be stuck on the sidelines due to travel issues, but they’ve since said the necessary authorisations have come through.
If you caught Monday’s game, you’ll know Wahi started in that 1-0 win over Ecuador in Philadelphia. He’s quickly become an important piece for the Elephants.
Now, the reason for the travel hiccup? Wahi is currently under investigation in France over alleged betting-related offences. Back on 17 May, while playing for Nice against Metz, the French league flagged an “unusual number of bets” placed internationally on him getting a yellow card — which he did, in a 0-0 draw. That triggered alerts to police, gambling authorities, and the French FA.
The Marseille prosecutor’s office told The Associated Press that a 23-year-old Ligue 1 player was arrested on 29 May 2026 as part of an investigation into alleged organised fraud, sports corruption, receiving stolen goods, and money laundering. He was questioned and released without being detained. Wahi’s reps haven’t commented yet.
Canada’s side is staying quiet too. Taous Ait, a spokesperson for the immigration minister, declined to comment, saying they’d need Wahi’s authorisation first.
For its part, the Ivorian Federation says it hasn’t had any official notice of legal or administrative proceedings against Wahi. They’re backing him fully, calling him “an important member of the national team” and reaffirming their confidence in him.
Quick bit of context: Wahi joined Nice on loan from Eintracht Frankfurt in January and bagged 9 goals in 18 games. He even scored twice in late May to help Nice avoid relegation, smashing Saint-Etienne 4-1 in the play-offs.
So, despite the noise, he’s on the plane to Toronto. Ivory Coast v Germany kicks off Saturday.
