It's the rivalry we all wait for! Nigeria's Super Falcons have booked a blockbuster quarter-final date with neighbours Cameroon - and a straight ticket to the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil is on the line.
Well, that was dramatic!
The Super Falcons left it late and left it loud, smashing Egypt 6-2 in their final Group C game on Wednesday to seal second place behind Malawi. Yes, you read that right - behind Malawi!
It was a proper goal fest. According to cbinews.tv, three of Nigeria’s six goals came from the spot, coolly dispatched by none other than record six-time Women’s African Footballer of the Year Asisat Oshoala, Christy Ucheibe, and captain Rasheedat Ajibade. Gift Monday, Uchenna Kanu and Joy Omewa also got on the scoresheet for a Falcons side that led 2-1 at the break.
Egypt’s Nadin Ghazy tried to spoil the party with a fine brace, including one penalty, but the Cleopatras bow out of the tournament with zero points from three games.
Now, the Group C table gist is where it gets spicy. Nigeria, Zambia and Malawi all finished on six points. But CAF’s tie-break rules threw goal difference out of the window. Only the head-to-head results between the three teams counted, which meant Zambia - despite two wins - dropped to third. Ouch.
For Malawi, it was a moment of magic. Zambia’s Barbra Banda, the tournament’s top scorer, struck after just two minutes with Prisca Chilufya adding a second before half-time. But Tabitha Chawinga’s 72nd-minute goal for Malawi proved to be the game-changer, sending the lowest-ranked team of the 16 qualifiers to the top of Group C. What a story!
So, what’s next?
Cameroon have already topped Group D after seeing off Ghana and Mali, with one group game against Cabo Verde left to play. They will now face our Super Falcons on Sunday.
It’s Nigeria vs Cameroon. Jollof derby vibes but make it WAFCON quarter-final. The winner doesn’t just make the semis - they punch an automatic ticket to the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Elsewhere in the quarters, fairy-tale team Malawi will face Ghana or Mali, while hosts Morocco take on South Africa and Cote d’Ivoire battle Algeria on Saturday.
