Remember that fairytale Wimbledon run in 2023? Well, Marketa Vondrousova’s career has just taken a brutal turn off the court.
Tennis just got a major shock this week, reports cbinewstv. Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova has been slapped with a four-year ban for refusing to take an anti-doping test.
Here’s what happened: Doping control officers showed up at her home in December 2025 for an out-of-competition test. Vondrousova didn’t give a sample. The 26-year-old Czech later told an independent tribunal that stress, poor mental health and concerns for her own safety clouded her decision-making that day.
The tribunal wasn’t having it though. After hearing from Vondrousova and the Doping Control Officer involved, they ruled there was “no compelling justification” for refusing the test.
International Tennis Integrity Agency boss Karen Moorhouse didn’t mince her words either. She said testing can be uncomfortable and adds pressure, but it’s vital for fair play. She also stressed that testers are professional, always match the player’s gender, carry ID, and players can verify who they are if they’re unsure. Safety for everyone is key, she added.
So what does this mean for Vondrousova? Her ban runs right through to 21 June 2030. Until then, she’s completely sidelined, no playing, no coaching, no even turning up at ITF, WTA, ATP, Grand Slam or national events.
It’s a massive fall from grace. Vondrousova made history in 2023 as the first unseeded player to win the Wimbledon women’s singles, beating Ons Jabeur in straight sets. She’s also a French Open finalist from 2019, a Tokyo 2021 Olympic silver medallist, and hit a career-high world number 6 in 2023. She’s bagged three WTA singles titles along the way.
But things have been quiet lately. She’s only played two matches on the WTA Tour this year and is currently ranked world number 122.
A tough day for tennis, and a reminder that the rules off the court are just as serious as the ones on it.
