TCN emphasized that vandalism remains a severe threat to the stability of Nigeria's power transmission network.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed that vandals were responsible for the collapse of Tower T99 along the Ughelli/Benin 330kV Transmission Line on March 15, 2026, leading to temporary disruptions in bulk power supply from Transcorp Power Plc to the national grid.
CBI News reports that the incident occurred in Coconut Village, Effurun Local Government Area, Warri, Delta State, and was discovered during a routine line patrol following a trip on the transmission line.
According to TCN, an inspection by its linesmen revealed that critical bracing members of the tower had been vandalized and removed, weakening the structure and causing it to collapse. Adjacent towers, T100 and T101, were also targeted by vandals but remain standing.
CBI News reports that the Ughelli/Benin 330kV line plays a key role in evacuating power generated by Transcorp Power Plc into the national grid, and the collapse has resulted in a temporary halt in this process.
In response, TCN has begun mobilizing resources for the urgent reconstruction, restoration, and reinforcement of the affected towers and transmission line to restore normal operations as quickly as possible.
The company urged host communities to stay vigilant, report any suspicious activities around transmission infrastructure to security agencies or the nearest TCN office, and stressed that safeguarding these critical national assets is a shared responsibility among all stakeholders.
