Neighbourhood plan to continue with Ramadan decorations every year...
Members of the Lombok neighbourhood in Utrecht decorated their streets for the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
They welcomed the sacred period with sparkling lights and festive displays.
Footage from Tuesday February 17, 2027 showed residents strolled through the neighbourhood as bright decorative lights illuminated Kanaalstraat, with a large crescent moon installation glowing over the area.
"This year, we did a new illumination for Ramadan. We did this with all the tradesmen. We had crescents last year. Now we installed Ramadan lights in the neighbourhood," explained Yasin, a local.
Residents described the initiative as 'special,'. They said it showed that while festive decorations are common during non-Muslim celebrations, this was the first time they saw their neighborhood decorated at a big scale.
"We only saw this in Muslim countries, but all the tradesmen here, like me, are happy when they see this. When they see people coming to shop, they are happy too," Yasin said. "We have been living in the Netherlands for 47 years. For the first time, we liked the illumination in our city, Lombok."
"A lot of customers and entrepreneurs here think that Ramadan is also a very important time, and in this way we also give extra attention and value to a lot of Utrechters, a lot of people who live and work here, who now have a very beautiful and blessed time," added Peter van Gool, a shopping street manager.
Yasin said that the neighbourhood set up Ramadan decorations every year, which allowed local Muslims enjoy a festive spirit during the holy month.
CBI News reports that Utrecht is home to around 55,000 Muslims.
Across the Netherlands, Muslims make up an estimated five to six percent of the population - approximately one million people.
