The United States Mission in Nigeria has reminded Nigerians who hold dual citizenship with the United States that they must travel with a valid U.S. passport whenever they enter or leave America.

cbinews.tv reports that the advisory was issued in a statement shared on the mission's official X account on Sunday.

According to the mission, the rule applies to all U.S. citizens, including children who have dual nationality.

The mission explained that dual-national U.S. citizens are not allowed to use their foreign passports to apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).

It warned that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security routinely rejects or cancels ESTA applications submitted by American citizens using non-U.S. passports.

The mission stressed that anyone who is a U.S. citizen must always enter and leave the United States with a valid American passport, regardless of whether they also hold the citizenship of another country.

It also advised U.S. citizens living overseas, including those residing in Nigeria, to check the validity of their passports before making travel arrangements.

According to the statement, travellers whose U.S. passports have expired or are close to expiring should renew them before embarking on their journey.

The mission further reminded travellers that many countries require passports to have at least six months' validity before they are allowed entry, urging people to check their travel documents well in advance to avoid disruptions.
