The United States has rolled out fresh travel restrictions and health screening measures as fears grow over a deadly Ebola outbreak in Central Africa that has already claimed more than 130 lives.
In a move aimed at curbing the spread of the virus, the Donald Trump administration has introduced new travel and health screening rules following a worsening Ebola outbreak in Central Africa.
According to cbinews.tv, the new measures announced on Monday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will see non-US passport holders barred from entering the United States if they have recently travelled to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan within the past 21 days.
Health officials say the outbreak is already severe. Congo’s health ministry has confirmed at least 131 deaths linked to the latest wave, with Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba updating the figure on Tuesday. Uganda has also reported one death connected to the outbreak, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
Under the new rules, which take effect immediately and will remain in place for at least 30 days, enhanced screening will also be carried out on travellers arriving from affected regions. However, US citizens, permanent residents, and American military personnel are exempt from the restrictions.
Authorities have also said they are working closely with airlines, border agencies, and global health organisations to trace and monitor anyone who may have been exposed during travel.
There are also reports from international aid groups suggesting that at least six Americans may have been exposed to Ebola while in Congo, although it is still unclear whether any of them have been infected or remain in the region.
Despite rising concern, the CDC has stressed that the current risk to the American public remains low. The agency added that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and adjust measures if needed as new information emerges.
