Move marks latest step by Trump administration to curb immigration.
The United States said on Wednesday it was suspending the processing of immigrant visas from 75 countries, in the latest move by President Donald Trump targeting foreigners seeking to move to America.
“The State Department is pausing immigrant visa processing for 75 countries,” a State Department spokesperson said.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on X that the countries affected include Somalia, as well as Russia and Iran.
She linked the move to a Fox News article reporting that several US allies are also on the list, including Brazil, Egypt and Thailand.
CBI News reports that Trump has repeatedly said he wants to reduce immigration from countries outside Europe. He has previously used harsh language to describe Somalis and has said he would prefer immigrants from Scandinavian countries.
The State Department said earlier this week that more than 100,000 visas have been revoked since Trump returned to office, marking a one year record.
Last month, the Department of Homeland Security said the administration had deported more than 605,000 people, while about 2.5 million others left the country voluntarily.
The visa suspension does not apply to tourist or business visas, though the Trump administration has said it will intensify vetting of applicants, including reviews of social media activity.
