Things just escalated in the Gulf. The US has launched strikes on Iranian military sites after an American Apache helicopter was brought down near the Strait of Hormuz, and Tehran’s already firing back.
So, here’s what’s going on. The US says it’s carried out a string of strikes on Iranian military and surveillance sites, and it’s all in response to an American helicopter being shot down over the Gulf on Monday.
According to US Central Command, they targeted air defence systems, ground control stations and radar sites close to the Strait of Hormuz. They’re calling it “a proportional response” for the downing of that Apache helicopter.
Now, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps isn’t taking it quietly. The IRGC says it’s hit back with strikes on 21 targets at US bases in the region – one in Bahrain and another in Jordan. Kuwait’s army also said it was busy intercepting an attack.
President Donald Trump had already pointed the finger at Iran for shooting down the chopper, saying the US “must, of necessity” respond. The good news? Both crew members survived and were picked up by an American sea drone.
US officials reckon Iran used a drone to bring the helicopter down. But – and it’s a big but – an unnamed US official told CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, that it’s not clear if the Iranian drone deliberately attacked. Iran hasn’t actually claimed responsibility either, according to the semi-official Mehr News Agency.
Trump said the helicopter was patrolling the Strait of Hormuz, that vital shipping lane that’s been basically shut since the US and Israel kicked off strikes on Iran back in late February.
Over in Iran, the IRGC claims US strikes damaged a telecommunications tower and two water tanks, hitting the cities of Jask and Sirik, plus Qeshm island in the Gulf. They’ve branded the American attacks “vicious”.
We’re still waiting on US officials to comment on reports of attacks on their bases, so no word yet on damage. Jordan’s military did confirm it shot down five missiles fired from Iran though. Bahrain also issued an air raid alert, with local authorities saying Iranian attacks were repelled.
Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, didn’t mince words on X: “Despite its defeats on the battlefield, the US opted to test our determination… Leave our region if you want to be safe.” He made it clear Iran “will leave no attack or threat unanswered”.
Back in Washington, House Speaker Mike Johnson said he was with Trump when the decision was made to resume US strikes on Iran. “We lament that it became necessary,” Johnson said, “but we’re going to have to take care of this business”.
