Imagine looking out over your fields in the Cotswolds and spotting three vans, masked men, and barrels with fake logos. That's exactly what happened last month - and now America has quietly pulled all its bombers out of Britain.
In a rather dramatic move, the Pentagon has confirmed that all its B-1 bombers have been withdrawn from RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.
The statement dropped on Sunday: "We can acknowledge now that all US bombers that were deployed to RAF Fairford have redeployed to their home stations in the United States." They added that "operational security" stopped them saying so sooner.
So why? It all goes back to 27 September.
A farmer in the tiny village of Whelford, right by the base perimeter, called police after seeing three vans blocking a lane and a group of masked men fleeing. The alarm was huge - 85 homes were evacuated. Aerial footage later showed barrels inside the vans and one van sporting a fake diesel delivery logo and phone number.
Counter-terror police said no explosives were found, but "a quantity of petrol was recovered."
Fairford isn't just any airfield. It's the only mainland UK base America uses for long-range bomber ops, and Britain gave Washington permission in March to use it for "specific defensive operations into Iran." US jets have been spotted coming and going since.
It also comes as UK energy prices hit record highs this week, which is why speculation has swung wildly from a foiled terror plot to an elaborate fuel theft.
The politics got messy fast. UK PM Andy Burnham said there were "strong indications that Iran played a part" - a claim Tehran "categorically rejects." Six London-based men in their mid-20s, including a dual UK-Iranian national, were arrested then bailed - a decision US President Donald Trump publicly questioned, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio pointing to a "foreign actor."
No. B-1s were deployed to Fairford during the Cold War and again after 9/11, but a full, sudden withdrawal linked to a counter-terror probe is unprecedented in recent years. Historically, the US keeps bombers in the UK as a visible deterrent. Pulling them is a signal - either precautionary or political.
Counter-terror police are still investigating who the vans belonged to, and why officers were reportedly tipped off by one of the suspects themselves. Expect heightened security at Fairford and more diplomatic friction between London, Washington and Tehran in the coming days.
