Tensions in the Middle East have flared again after the U.S. military intercepted Iranian attacks on three Navy ships in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, triggering retaliatory strikes on Iranian military facilities and raising fears that the fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran could collapse at any moment.
The U.S. military on Thursday confirmed that American forces intercepted Iranian attacks targeting three Navy ships in the Strait of Hormuz and launched counterstrikes against Iranian military facilities allegedly linked to the assault.
According to U.S. Central Command, the attacks were described as “unprovoked Iranian attacks,” prompting immediate self-defense operations by American forces in the region.
CBI News notes that despite the confrontation, the U.S. military stated that no American ships were hit, stressing that Washington is not seeking further escalation but remains fully prepared to defend its personnel and military assets.
Speaking to reporters in Washington, U.S. President Donald Trump insisted the month-old ceasefire between the two countries was still holding despite the violence.
“They trifled with us today. We blew them away,” Trump declared.
Meanwhile, Iranian state media reported that the country’s armed forces exchanged fire with “the enemy” on Qeshm Island, located in the Strait of Hormuz. The island, the largest in the Persian Gulf, is home to roughly 150,000 residents and hosts a key water desalination facility.
Iranian media outlets also reported loud explosions and defensive fire in western Tehran, while blasts were heard near Bandar Abbas in southern Iran. However, officials did not immediately identify the source of the explosions.
The latest military exchange has intensified global concerns over security in the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes. Earlier Thursday, a shipping data company reported that Iran had established a new government agency tasked with vetting and taxing vessels seeking passage through the strategic waterway.
The renewed hostilities come amid already heightened geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region, with analysts warning that any further escalation could threaten global oil supplies and international maritime trade.
