After nearly three months of war, there’s finally light at the end of the tunnel. Iran, the US and Pakistan all say real progress is being made — and a deal could be announced within days.
So, could this be it? After almost three months of missiles, closed shipping lanes and global market chaos, the US and Iran are actually talking — and both sides say it’s going well, cbinews.tv reports.
On Saturday, Iran, the United States and mediator Pakistan all struck a noticeably upbeat tone. Tehran says it’s now focused on finalising a memorandum of understanding to end the war.
Iran’s top negotiator Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi sat down with Pakistan’s army chief Asim Munir in Tehran, according to Iran’s foreign ministry. Munir also met President Masoud Pezeshkian before leaving, Iranian state media said. The Pakistani army called the last 24 hours of negotiations “encouraging” and reckons they’re edging towards a final understanding.
Over in New Delhi, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio sounded just as optimistic. “There’s been some progress done, some progress made, even as I speak to you now, there’s some work being done,” he told reporters. “There is a chance that, whether it’s later today, tomorrow, in a couple days, we may have something to say. "Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei backed that up. “The trend this week has been towards a reduction in disputes, but there are still issues that need to be discussed through mediators. We will have to wait and see where the situation ends in the next three or four days. "
So what’s on the table? Pakistan’s mediation is trying to bridge the gap after weeks of war that shut down the Strait of Hormuz to most shipping — even with a shaky ceasefire in place. That’s sent global energy markets into a spin. Talks are reportedly circling around a 14-point document proposed by Iran, which Tehran sees as the main framework.
Messages are also going back and forth between Washington and Tehran. Baghaei said the US blockade on Iranian shipping matters, but the big priorities are stopping the threat of fresh US attacks and ending the conflict in Lebanon, where Iran-backed Hezbollah is fighting Israeli troops in the south. Rubio didn’t mince his words on US demands: “Iran can never have a nuclear weapon. The straits need to be open without tolls. They need to turn over their enriched uranium. "Still, after months of deadlock, all sides are finally singing from a similar hymn sheet. If the next three or four days go as planned, we might actually see this war end.
