Just when you thought things were cooling down… the US and Iran are trading blows again, and Trump’s tossing in last-minute demands to keep the Strait of Hormuz open.
So, the US and Iran are back at it. Over the weekend, American forces launched what they’re calling “self-defence” strikes inside Iran. At the same time, President Donald Trump has sent back his own edits to a proposed deal meant to extend the ceasefire and get the Strait of Hormuz back to normal - CbinewsTv reports.
According to US Central Command on Sunday night, the strikes hit Iranian radar sites and command and control hubs. Why? Because Iran shot down a US MQ-1 drone that Washington says was flying over international waters. Not taking that lightly, US fighter jets took out Iranian air defences, a ground control station, and two attack drones that CENTCOM said were threatening ships in the area.
Iran’s side of the story? The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claims they hit a US air base that was allegedly used to attack a telecoms tower on Iran’s Sirik Island. They didn’t name the base, but this all came after Kuwait said it had fended off drone and missile attacks. That’s per several Iranian state-run outlets.
This isn’t new. The US and Iran have been trading fire on and off since that shaky ceasefire kicked in back in early April. Kuwait got caught in the crossfire last week too. It’s been enough to rattle nerves in the region, but so far the ceasefire hasn’t completely fallen apart.
Now, about that deal. The big thing on the table is a memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran. The idea is to stop the fighting and set up talks on the thorny issues that are still unresolved.
Trump met with advisers on Friday and sent back changes, which means talks are dragging into another week. He jumped on Truth Social after the strikes, saying: “Iran really wants to make a deal, and it will be a good one for the U.S.A. and those that are with us.”
What exactly does he want changed? Officials aren’t spilling all the details, but the word is Trump wants firmer language on Iran’s nuclear commitments and a solid promise to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. US allies in the Gulf are being kept in the loop.
Trump’s also reportedly uneasy about any financial relief Iran might get. He’s keen to avoid “pallets of cash” headlines like the ones from the Obama-era nuclear deal he’s always criticised.
Before these latest strikes were announced, more military action seemed unlikely with a deal so close. Regional allies definitely don’t want the fighting to kick off again.
