United States President Donald Trump has announced that Washington has agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran, a move aimed at creating room for negotiations to resolve the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
CBI News reports that Trump disclosed the development in a post on his Truth Social platform, explaining that the temporary truce was reached following discussions with Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, and Field Marshal Asim Munir.
According to the US president, the ceasefire is conditional on Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime corridor through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply is transported.
“Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a double-sided CEASEFIRE,” Trump wrote.
Trump said the two-week window would allow both sides to finalise negotiations for a broader and long-term peace agreement.
He added that the United States had already achieved its military objectives and that discussions were progressing toward a more permanent settlement in the region.
“The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East,” he said.
The US president also revealed that Washington had received a 10-point proposal from Iran, which he described as a workable framework for negotiations.
“We received a 10-point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate. Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated,” Trump stated.
Reports indicate that Israel has also agreed to the temporary ceasefire and has suspended its bombing campaigns and other military operations.
The agreement was announced about two hours before the expiration of Trump’s earlier ultimatum, in which the US president warned that Iran’s “whole civilisation will die tonight, never to be brought back again” if its leadership failed to make major concessions.
Iranian authorities, however, described the ceasefire arrangement as a major victory, saying it compelled the United States to accept Tehran’s proposed framework for negotiations.
In a statement, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council claimed the outcome represented a significant defeat for Washington.
“The enemy, in its unfair, unlawful, and criminal war against the Iranian nation, has suffered an undeniable, historic, and crushing defeat,” the council said.
The council added that the proposed 10-point plan includes provisions for the regulated passage through the Strait of Hormuz under the coordination of Iran’s armed forces.
It also stated that the United States had agreed to lift both primary and secondary sanctions imposed on Iran as part of the evolving framework for negotiations.
