Looks like we might get a first peek at the US-Iran deal before*Friday — and it’s only “a page and a half” according to Vance.
So, here’s the latest from cbinews.tv — things are moving quickly between Washington and Tehran.
US Vice-President JD Vance says Donald Trump could drop a preliminary deal to end the war with Iran before Friday. That’s despite Trump already telling reporters at the G7 summit in France that the agreement is “all signed”.
What’s in it? Vance describes the memorandum of understanding as just “about a page and a half” and “very general”. The real detail? That’ll come later during technical talks.
A few key bits we know so far, per senior US officials:
- Strait of Hormuz reopens Friday — the same day the deal gets formally signed in Geneva.
- Ceasefire extended 60 days while both sides hammer out a final agreement.
- Nuclear inspectors back in Iran — Vance told NBC the IAEA and US will help Iran destroy its highly enriched uranium stockpile.
- Paragraph one commits Iran to “regional peace and stability”, including no more funding for “terrorist organisations” and a verifiable pledge not to build a nuclear weapon.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has confirmed new talks kick off in Switzerland on Friday too. Meanwhile, Trump told French President Emmanuel Macron the preliminary deal was signed electronically by himself, Vance, and Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
Technical talks on Iran’s nuclear programme are expected this week. Any sanctions relief or asset releases? That’s tied to Iran actually meeting its commitments.
On the G7 front, leaders from Egypt, Qatar and the UAE are joining a special session on Iran Tuesday. The UK and France have been pushing for a defensive mission in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump reckons the US won’t “need much help” keeping shipping lanes open, but said “a ship or two” from allies wouldn’t hurt.
Israel’s take? Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israeli forces will stay in security zones in Lebanon, Syria and Gaza “as long as necessary”. He stressed Iran won’t get nuclear weapons — deal or no deal. US officials clarified that while Lebanon’s covered by the ceasefire, Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory isn’t part of the bargain. Israel keeps its right to self-defence.
And in case you missed it — Pakistan’s PM Shehbaz Sharif, who’s been mediating, announced the breakthrough includes “immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon”. Trump also said he’s ordered the US naval blockade of Iranian ports lifted and claimed “ships are starting to move” out of the Strait of Hormuz.
