Washington and Caracas have restored diplomatic relations following the reopening of the U.S. embassy in Caracas.
The United States flag was raised above its embassy in Venezuela on Saturday for the first time in seven years, marking the reopening of the diplomatic mission after ties were severed in 2019.
Laura Dogu, the U.S. chargé d’affaires and the embassy’s most senior diplomat, posted on X that she and her team raised the Stars and Stripes exactly seven years after it was lowered, signalling a new chapter in relations between the two countries.
The closure of the U.S. embassy in Caracas occurred in March 2019 after diplomatic relations were cut off amid disputes over the legitimacy of the Venezuelan government at that time.
Earlier this month, the United States and Venezuela agreed to restore diplomatic ties following a significant political shift and negotiations aimed at improving bilateral relations.
