US Embassy issues security alert over potential terror threats in Nigeria.
The United States Embassy has issued a security alert warning of a potential terrorist threat targeting American diplomatic facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in Nigeria.
In a notice released in Abuja, the embassy advised American citizens to take extra precautions when visiting locations linked to the United States.
The alert specifically mentioned the U.S. Embassy Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General Lagos.
“U.S. citizens should take additional precautions when travelling to the U.S. Embassy, the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, and U.S.-affiliated schools,” the notice stated.
CBI News reports that the embassy urged Americans to remain vigilant, vary travel routes and schedules, avoid predictable routines, and stay aware of their surroundings.
Other recommended measures include keeping a low profile in public, avoiding large gatherings or demonstrations, reviewing personal security plans with family, keeping mobile phones charged for emergencies, and familiarising themselves with emergency exits in buildings.
Despite the advisory, consular services at both the Abuja embassy and Lagos consulate will continue as scheduled.
The embassy also encouraged U.S. citizens to monitor updates on its official website and follow advisories issued by the United States Department of State.
Travellers were further advised to consult the Nigeria country information page on travel.state.gov for guidance on security conditions and potential risks in the country.
The alert comes amid the ongoing conflict involving Israel, the United States, and Iran, which began on February 28, 2026.
Military operations have included large-scale airstrikes targeting Iranian military infrastructure, alongside retaliatory missile and drone attacks by Iran on Israeli cities and U.S. military assets in the Gulf region.
The conflict has heightened tensions across the Middle East and impacted global energy markets and security conditions in several regions.
