Stakeholders kick against street trading, after the Ojee Market crash
An unspecified number of people have lost their lives while scores sustained varying levels of injuries when a petrol-laden tanker lost control destroying everything on its path.
The incident occurred at the popular Beere-Ojee road, an ever-busy area mostly inhabited by traders, artisans and commuters.
According to an eyewitness account, the sad incident occurred about an hour after officials of the Oyo State enforcement team had besieged the facility to enforce its no street trading policy.
"Three people died when a truck coming from Ibode's crashed. People were shouting for others to leave the road. By the time it got to Bere, it had killed people. Three people died, but two were injured," Tunrayo Arike an eyewitness, said.
Similarly, Assistant Superintendent at the Oyo State Fire Service Muftau Amao lamented the spate of illegal street trading which he noted was inimical to the well-being of residents calling for stricter measures to forestall a recurrence of the tragedy.
