No headlamps, no rear lights, no reflective tape, yet still on the road. The truck owners’ association says this has to stop.

The Association of Maritime Truck Owners, AMATO, has sent a strong warning to truckers deploying rickety and unsafe trucks for operations.

According to the association, some trucks working within the maritime industry are hitting the road without basic safety features, such as functional headlamps, rear lights and reflective tapes.

AMATO President, Remi Ogungbemi, in a statement, said these items might look small, but they are absolutely critical to road safety.

He explained that if a truck breaks down or has an emergency at night, it is those lights and reflective tapes that alert other road users to its presence, whether it is moving or stationary. That simple alert, he noted, can prevent avoidable accidents and save lives.

He therefore urged all truck owners, fleet managers and drivers to ensure these safety features are properly installed and working before any truck is deployed.

“Compliance with these basic safety requirements will significantly enhance road safety, protect lives and property, and safeguard valuable investments,” he said.

Ogungbemi added, “Safety is not optional; it is a responsibility we all owe to ourselves, our families, and every road user. I urge every maritime truck owner and driver to ensure that their trucks are equipped with functional headlamps, rear lights, and reflective tapes before embarking on any journey. Let us work together to eliminate preventable accidents and uphold the image of professionalism in the maritime haulage industry.”

He stressed that the industry must remain committed to the highest standards of safety, professionalism and compliance.
