Imagine trying to study, wash, or even use the loo with no lights and no running water for a week — that’s the reality for University of Jos students right now.

According to cbinewstv, students at the University of Jos took to the streets on Tuesday to protest a power outage that’s left their hostels in the dark for the past week.

Life on campus has become unbearable, students say. Without electricity, basic amenities have ground to a halt. Water isn’t pumping, toilets aren’t clean, and studying has become a nightmare since the start of the academic session.

“We resumed and we’ve not had power in our hostels,” Felix Bala, one of the protesting students, told cbinews.tv. “We were told power was cut off. We’re demanding that electricity be restored immediately.”

Bala explained that the blackout started last week. Because the water supply relies on electric pumps, there’s been no running water since Thursday. Students say they waited through Monday with no improvement.

Frustration is running high because repeated complaints to university authorities haven’t led to any concrete action, protesters told cbinews.tv. They’ve warned the demonstrations won’t stop until their demands are met.

Another student, who asked to remain anonymous, said some off-campus students urged the protesters to lift the blockade and give management time to respond. That appeal didn’t work.

At the time of this report, cbinewstv’s efforts to reach Students’ Union Government President Senator Younglan Talyoung were unsuccessful. The Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Chris Piwuna, was also unavailable for comment, with his phone switched off.
