The UN Security Council has strongly condemned the wave of deadly attacks rocking Mali, as jihadist groups and Tuareg separatists continue to tighten their grip on parts of the country.
The UN Security Council has condemned the recent attacks carried out by Al-Qaeda-linked jihadists and Tuareg separatists in Mali, cbinews.tv reports.
In a statement released Friday, the council described the attacks that began on April 25 as “heinous and cowardly,” while calling for everyone behind the violence including organizers, financiers and sponsors to be brought to justice.
Mali has faced growing instability since the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) joined forces with Tuareg rebels from the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) to launch attacks against the ruling military junta.
The coordinated assaults on April 25 and 26 targeted key towns and reportedly killed Mali’s influential defence minister.
Since then, northern towns including Kidal have fallen under the control of separatist and jihadist groups, who are also said to have imposed a blockade around the capital, Bamako.
Mali has struggled with worsening insecurity since 2012, with violence linked to Al-Qaeda, the Islamic State group, separatist factions and criminal gangs continuing to destabilise the country.
