A war drone meant for the Black Sea didn't sink quietly, it washed up in a busy NATO port in Romania and blew itself up in broad daylight on Friday morning.
So here's what went down
Romania's defence ministry confirmed a sea drone "of the type used in the war in Ukraine" self-destructed in the Port of Constanta at around 10:30 am local time (0730 GMT). No one was hurt, and it wasn't theirs to begin with.
Ukraine owned up to it straight away. Their navy said the unmanned surface vessel was on a mission in the Black Sea when Russian electronic warfare systems jammed it, knocked it off course, and sent it drifting towards the Romanian coast.
Foreign ministry spokesman Georgii Tykhyi said Kyiv told Bucharest in good time that they'd lost control because of the jamming. He said that quick coordination meant the Romanians could take "necessary measures to prevent harm to civilians."
His take was blunt: "This incident shows once again that Russia's ongoing full-scale aggression poses a threat not only to Ukraine, but to the entire region."
Russia, unsurprisingly, disagreed. Its embassy in Bucharest posted on Telegram that these are Ukrainian unmanned maritime vehicles, and said "attempts to link these drones, directly or indirectly, to Russia... are completely unfounded."
It wasn't just one drone either. President Nicusor Dan wrote on X that Ukraine had warned about four in total. One blew up in the port, a second was safely detonated by the Coast Guard just off Constanta, and two more exploded about 145 km east of the city.
This comes only a week after a Russian aerial drone crashed into a block of flats in Galati, near the Ukrainian border, injuring two people.
Romania, an EU and NATO member, has logged dozens of airspace breaches since the full-scale invasion began in 2022 and has been asking the alliance to bolster its air defences. Dan called Friday's event a "significant security incident" and said it was the direct consequence of Russia's war against Ukraine, one that requires "a high level of vigilance."
