Putin's war chest just got another leak, and this time it's his secretive fleet of gas and oil tankers feeling the pinch.
So Keir Starmer has rocked up to the G7 in Evian-les-Bains, France, with Volodymyr Zelensky in the room, and he's not come empty-handed. The UK has just rolled out 70 new sanctions designed to squeeze Moscow's war machine, and the big headline is they're finally going after Russia's so-called "shadow fleet".
We're talking more than 20 oil tankers plus several liquefied natural gas vessels, with Britain saying it's the first G7 country to sanction ships linked to Russia's Arctic LNG 2 project. Starmer's line is pretty blunt: "These sanctions target the vessels, the money and the actors propping up Russia's war economy, and in turn, threatening European security". Downing Street reckons the 70 actions "will choke Russia's war effort across multiple fronts" by hitting the shadow fleet, military procurement chains and the finance networks used to dodge existing bans.
Timing matters. This comes after a Russian missile and drone barrage early Monday killed at least 11 people across Ukraine and set fire to one of Kyiv's most important Orthodox monasteries. Allies are trying to tilt things back in Kyiv's favour after more than four years of war, with Zelensky joining the seven leading powers in person.
It's not just sticks either. Starmer also announced a proper energy lifeline for Ukraine: about £210 million in export finance so UK-based Urenco can supply enriched uranium to Ukraine's Energoatom. His office says that deal will "power Ukraine for the next two years", which is a big deal heading into another winter.
Bit of domestic context too, Starmer's under pressure at home after his defence minister quit last week in a row over military spending, so turning up at the G7 with both sanctions and nuclear fuel is very much a "we're still leading" moment.
In short: more tankers blacklisted, more banks and sneaky procurement networks named, and Ukraine gets a two-year nuclear fuel guarantee while the G7 talks about pushing for what Starmer calls a just and lasting peace.
