After weeks of intensive nationwide surveillance, Uganda is officially Ebola-free again, and the announcement has brought a huge sigh of relief across East Africa.
Great news coming out of Uganda this week.
The country's Health Minister has officially declared Uganda Ebola-free following its latest outbreak of the deadly viral haemorrhagic disease.
According to the Minister, the outbreak, which was first declared in mid-May, infected 20 people and sadly claimed two lives in Uganda.
He also noted that 15 people were infected in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo, which remains the epicentre of the wider epidemic, with confirmed cases there now standing at more than 3,000.
Speaking on Tuesday, Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi said the ministry had kept up intensive surveillance across the country throughout this period.
"Throughout this period, the Ministry of Health maintained intensive surveillance nationwide, and no new Ebola cases have been detected," he said.
The declaration marks the end of another tense chapter for the region as health teams continue to monitor the situation across the border.
