Fancy a bit of drama before kick-off? UEFA’s just thrown some serious shade at FIFA with their latest referee pick.
So, here’s the tea from cbinews.tv — UEFA have gone and appointed Omar Artan as referee for the Super Cup. Yep, that Omar Artan. The one who was blocked from entering America for the World Cup.
If you’re thinking this feels like a cheeky dig at FIFA, you’re not alone. The timing is spicy. Just days after the whole visa scandal around the Somalian official blew up, European football’s big bosses announced he’ll be the man in the middle.
Quick recap: Artan got caught up in all those visa and immigration rows under the Donald Trump regime and ended up being denied entry to the US. Couldn’t officiate at the World Cup as planned. Tough break.
But UEFA clearly spotted an opportunity and jumped on it. In a statement released today, they confirmed the 34-year-old — who was crowned Africa’s Men’s Referee of the Year in 2025 — will take charge of the Super Cup.
Who’s playing? Champions League winners Paris Saint Germain vs Europa League champions Aston Villa. It all goes down in Salzburg on 12 August.
Petty? Strategic? You decide. But UEFA definitely made a statement with this one.
