UEFA chief warns Italy must upgrade stadiums or risk losing Euro 2032 hosting rights.
UEFA chief Aleksander Ceferin has cautioned that Italy could lose the chance to co-host Euro 2032 with Turkey due to the poor condition of its stadiums, which he called some of the worst in Europe.
In an interview with the Gazzetta Dello Sport, Ceferin said the tournament will go ahead but warned that if Italy’s infrastructure is not ready, the country will be excluded from hosting matches.
He criticised the relationship between Italian football authorities and politics as a major problem and urged politicians to question why stadiums remain in such poor condition.
CBI News reports that Italy must select five stadiums by October from 11 candidate cities including Rome, Milan, and Turin.
Only Juventus’ Allianz Stadium in Turin is fully ready, while projects at Milan’s San Siro, Roma’s new stadium, Fiorentina’s Stadio Artemio Franchi, and Naples’ Stadio Diego Armando Maradona require redevelopment or new construction.
All stadium works must begin by March 2027 to meet UEFA standards and secure Italy’s role as a host nation for Euro 2032.
