One Worker Still Missing Following Accident at Kawasaki Steelworks.
A 12-storey scaffold collapsed in Japan on Tuesday, killing two workers and leaving one missing, local media reported.
The accident occurred at a steelworks near Tokyo when the 40-metre structure gave way during the dismantling of a crane, broadcaster NHK said.
Aerial footage from NHK showed a large, water-filled hole at the portside complex in Kawasaki, with fire engines and rescue crews at the scene and divers conducting searches.
According to NHK, citing police and fire officials, five people fell when the scaffold collapsed. Three were left unconscious in critical condition, one was conscious, and another remained missing. Local media later confirmed that two of the workers had died.
Kanagawa Prefecture Police said that the accident took place at a JFE Steel site in Kawasaki City, about 20 kilometres from Tokyo, without providing further details. The site is in a part of the Kawasaki waterfront where cranes used for unloading cargo from ships were being dismantled.
JFE Steel is Japan's second-largest steelmaker, after Nippon Steel.
