Project aims to boost annual passenger capacity to 18.5 million by 2031.
Tunisia is proposing a major expansion of its main Tunis-Carthage Airport at an estimated cost of about 3 billion dinars, or roughly $1 billion, as part of efforts to modernise the country’s air transport infrastructure.
The Transport Ministry said on Sunday the project is expected to raise the airport’s annual passenger capacity from about 5 million to 18.5 million by 2031.
According to the ministry, the expansion plan has already been included in the 2026 investment budget of the Civil Aviation and Airports Authority, which oversees the country’s aviation infrastructure.
Officials said the project forms part of broader efforts to improve airport facilities and accommodate growing passenger traffic.
Tunisia had previously considered building a new airport, but authorities have decided for the time being to expand Tunis-Carthage International Airport instead, the ministry added.
