It’s all change for Tunisia – and it’s only been one game.
Big drama out of Tunisia’s camp. The Tunisian Football Federation has shown head coach Sabri Lamouchi the door after that nightmare 5-1 hammering by Sweden in their World Cup opener. Stepping in? Frenchman Hervé Renard, and he’s got a job on his hands.
The news dropped on Instagram, with the federation calling it a “mutual agreement”, according to cbinews.tv. Lamouchi, 54, had only been in the hot seat since January, so that’s a brutal end to a short stint.
Renard’s deal is just for the World Cup for now. The federation says they’ll chat about a longer-term contract after the tournament wraps up.
What’s next for Tunisia?
After Sunday’s heavy loss, the North African side have a mountain to climb to make the last 32. They face Japan on Saturday, then the Netherlands on June 25. Not easy.
Why Renard?
If you follow African football, you’ll know Renard. The man’s got serious pedigree across Africa and the Arabic-speaking world:
- Won the Africa Cup of Nations with Zambia, then again with Ivory Coast
- Took Morocco to the 2018 World Cup
- Led Saudi Arabia in 2022 and masterminded that famous win over Argentina, who went on to lift the trophy
- Managed France at the Women’s World Cup last year
- Was back with Saudi Arabia’s men until April, when he left after two friendly defeats and was replaced by Georgios Donis
This isn’t new for Tunisia
They’ve actually done a mid-tournament switch before. Back in 1998, Henryk Kasperczak got the boot after losing to England and Colombia, with the team already out before playing Romania. And remember Spain in 2018? They sacked Julen Lopetegui two days before facing Portugal because he’d agreed to join Real Madrid.
The challenge ahead
Tunisia are at their seventh World Cup and have never made it out of the group stage. Renard has barely any time to turn things around. As for Lamouchi, the former France international was in charge of Ivory Coast at the 2014 World Cup before this.
Tough start, bold move. Let’s see if Renard can work some of his magic.
