England were just moments away from a World Cup final, but a dramatic late collapse against Argentina has left fans devastated. Despite the backlash, Thomas Tuchel says England are not cursed—and he's accepting the criticism that comes with the job.
Thomas Tuchel has refused to buy into the idea that England are "cursed" after their painful 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, insisting the criticism should fall on him.
The Three Lions looked on course for a place in Sunday's World Cup final against Spain at the MetLife Stadium after Anthony Gordon fired England into the lead early in the second half in Atlanta.
But instead of pushing for a second goal, England dropped deeper and allowed Argentina back into the game. Enzo Fernández punished that cautious approach with a late equaliser before Lautaro Martínez headed home Lionel Messi's cross in stoppage time to complete a dramatic comeback.
The result has sparked heavy criticism of Tuchel's defensive tactics, with fans and pundits questioning his decisions after England took the lead.
When asked whether he felt he had got his substitutions and tactical changes wrong, Tuchel stood by his choices.
"No, I believe that's just the nature of the game," he said.
"As soon as you lose, you get criticised. That's just what it is. No one knows what would have happened if we had made different decisions."
He added: "It makes no sense to dwell on that or lose my head. I'm responsible for the decisions, I made them, so I accept the criticism. That's just the way it is."
Despite another painful exit, Tuchel remains convinced England's struggles are not down to bad luck or any so-called curse, even as questions continue to grow over whether his tactical approach is the right one for the national team.
