Top White House aide says she will continue working during treatment.
US President Donald Trump said Monday that his chief of staff, Susie Wiles, has been diagnosed with breast cancer but will continue working while undergoing treatment.
Wiles, 68, the first woman to serve as White House chief of staff, has been widely credited with helping drive Trump’s second presidency behind the scenes.
“Susie Wiles is an incredible chief of staff, a great person and one of the strongest people I know, but unfortunately she has been diagnosed with early stage breast cancer and has decided to take on this challenge immediately rather than waiting,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform.
He said she has a strong medical team and that her prognosis is excellent.
Trump added that Wiles would spend “virtually full time at the White House” during her treatment.
The president faces a range of challenges including tensions with Iran and declining approval ratings for his Republican Party ahead of key midterm elections in November.
Wiles, who began working with Trump in Florida during his 2016 presidential campaign, is known for keeping a low public profile while playing a central role inside the White House.
Trump has previously referred to her as “The Ice Maiden” and described her as “the most powerful woman in the world.”
