President Donald Trump says the US is taking its time over a possible agreement with Iran, insisting Washington will not be pressured into signing a rushed deal as tensions in the Middle East remain high.
President Donald Trump says the United States will “not rush into a deal” with Iran despite growing expectations of a possible agreement to ease tensions in the Middle East.
According to cbinews.tv, Trump made the statement on Sunday via his Truth Social account, stressing that ongoing negotiations with Tehran were moving in an “orderly and constructive manner”.
“The negotiations are proceeding in an orderly and constructive manner, and I have informed my representatives not to rush into a deal because time is on our side,” Trump wrote.
He also maintained that the US blockade on Iranian ports would remain fully in place until any agreement is officially reached and signed.
The blockade was imposed in April after Iran reportedly disrupted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz following the US-Israeli attacks on Iran earlier this year.
Trump added that while relations between both countries were becoming “more professional and productive”, Iran must never be allowed to develop nuclear weapons.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei revealed that both sides were close to agreeing on a 14-clause framework deal aimed at easing tensions.
Reports from Axios suggest the proposed agreement could include a 60-day ceasefire extension, reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and fresh talks on Iran’s nuclear programme.
However, several Republican lawmakers close to Trump have raised concerns that the deal may favour Iran too heavily.
Senators Roger Wicker, Ted Cruz and Thom Tillis all questioned whether the proposed arrangement could allow Iran to retain nuclear materials or regain economic advantages without enough guarantees.
