US media have identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, California.
CBI News notes that Police have arrested the gunman who tried to storm the White House correspondents’ dinner at the Washington Hilton hotel attended by President Donald Trump and members of his cabinet.
A US attorney says the suspect will be charged with two counts of “using a firearm during a crime of violence” and for “assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon”. He will be arraigned in a federal court on Monday.
Trump says the suspect was heavily armed and appeared to be acting alone.
He also says he may have been the target of the security incident, and officials are working on finding the motive.
We can see from the footage of the incident that there was a scramble by the shooter to get towards that ballroom.
And at some point during that, an officer was shot. It’s understood that the officer was wearing a protective vest and was shot in the vest.
He’s stable and has been talking to people, including the president.
Trump says shooting likely unrelated to war on Iran.
At Trump’s press conference earlier, he said it was unlikely that the shooting was linked to the war on Iran.
“It’s not going to deter me from winning the war in Iran. I don’t know if that had anything to do with it, I really don’t think so, based on what we know,” Trump told reporters.
However, earlier, he said “you never know” if it could be linked to the war, and said investigators were working on the motive for the shooting.
