On Tuesday it was "a deal in two or three days." By Wednesday, it was "the bully of the Middle East is DEAD."
Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Wednesday with a pretty blunt warning for Tehran. He said Iran had dragged its feet on a Middle East deal for too long, and now it would have to pay.
His post came right after a fresh exchange of fire between the US and Iran that has badly strained the ceasefire that took effect back in April.
"The Bully of the Middle East is DEAD!!! They've taken too long to negotiate a deal that would have been great for them, now they will have to pay the price!!!" Trump wrote, claiming the Iranian military had been "completely defeated."
It's a sharp turn. Just on Tuesday, he was telling reporters the talks were in their "final throes" and could be wrapped up in a couple of days.
What happened in between? Late on Tuesday, US forces said they launched strikes inside Iran in retaliation for the downing of an American helicopter on Monday. Iranian media reported explosions along the country's southern coast.
US Central Command later said American Air Force and Navy assets had hit command and control, defence and surveillance sites.
Iran hit back on Wednesday morning, saying it had attacked American bases in Jordan and Bahrain.
So, from near-deal to open threats in under 24 hours. The ceasefire is looking very shaky.
