The annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner was abruptly postponed on Saturday evening after President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were escorted from the venue amid reports of possible gunfire near the Washington Hilton ballroom. The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is traditionally one of Washington’s highest-profile annual events, bringing together journalists, political leaders, celebrities, and members of the diplomatic community.
According to initial accounts, security personnel moved swiftly to evacuate the President, First Lady, senior administration officials, and attendees after loud sounds believed to be gunfire were heard inside or near the event space.
At the time of the incident, President Trump and the First Lady were seated on stage alongside leadership of the White House Correspondents’ Association when the disturbance occurred. Security teams responded immediately, escorting dignitaries from the ballroom as precautionary measures were implemented.
Trump was rushed from the Washington Hilton after shots were reported near the screening area, with law enforcement later confirming a suspect was taken into custody.
Trump said that when he first heard the gunshot, he "thought it was a tray going down."
"I heard a noise and sort of thought it was a tray. I thought it was a tray going down," Trump said. "I've heard that many times, and it was a pretty loud noise, and it was from quite far away."
Following the evacuation, President Trump issued a statement via Truth Social confirming that he and the First Lady were safe and that law enforcement authorities had instructed all guests to exit the premises in accordance with established security protocols.
“Law enforcement has requested that we leave the premises, consistent with protocol, which we will do immediately,” Trump wrote. “The First Lady, the Vice President, and all Cabinet members are in perfect condition. I will be addressing the press in approximately 30 minutes from the White House Briefing Room.”
The President also announced that the White House Correspondents’ Dinner would be rescheduled within the next 30 days following consultations with event organisers and security officials. According to the US President, the incident was "rather traumatic" for First lady Melania Trump.
"I think she knew immediately what happened. She was saying, 'That's a bad noise.'"
Trump also called for unity among Americans.
"In light of this evening’s events, I ask that all Americans recommit with their hearts and resolving our difference peacefully," he said. "We have to resolve our differences."
