A fresh rift has opened between Washington and Kyiv, with Donald Trump calling for a new Ukrainian president while pushing for an end to strikes on Russian oil refineries. At stake are peace negotiations, military support and the energy costs affecting ordinary people.

US President Donald Trump has called for Ukraine to get a new president, accusing Volodymyr Zelensky of failing to reach a peace deal with Russia. The remarks follow a growing dispute over Ukraine’s attacks on Russian oil refineries. Reuters reported that Trump linked the strikes to pressure on fuel supplies and prices.

Trump’s criticism comes after he announced a diesel supply deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin, including an initial delivery of more than 300,000 tonnes, with further shipments planned. Washington has also temporarily eased sanctions to allow Russian diesel exports. Reuters reported the proposed deliveries.

Zelensky has condemned the agreement, arguing that easing sanctions without a lasting reduction in hostilities could help finance Russia’s war effort. Kyiv has also proposed stopping its refinery strikes if Moscow halts attacks on Ukrainian power plants, according to reports by Axios.

The disagreement highlights the difficult balance between reducing fuel costs, maintaining pressure on Moscow and securing a peace deal that Ukraine considers fair.

For Ukrainians living through the war, the stakes remain enormous: continued attacks, damaged infrastructure and uncertainty over international support. The next question is whether Washington and Kyiv can bridge their differences and agree on steps towards de-escalation.
